Sanskrit College which is now The Sanskrit College and University has continued to spread the light of knowledge since the laying of its foundation in 1824 under the auspices of Rt. Honorable William Pit Amherst that John Paskal Larkins Esquire. The University specializes in the scholarship of Indian Tradition, Oriental Philosophy and Religion with undergraduate programmes in Sanskrit, (both formal and TOL system) Pali, Linguistics, Ancient Indian and World History, Bengali and English. At present Sanskrit along with the other subjects is also taught at the postgraduate level.Sanskrit College gained the university status and became The Sanskrit College and University by the Government of West Bengal in 2015.
